'Dying' NASA satellite leaves Australia's north waiting hours for latest fire information

In short:

A satellite used to detect remote bushfires in real-time across two-thirds of Australia is "dying", and it could be months before a replacement is online.

The system has failed to detect several recent fires that ignited over summer, as well as a second fire that sent an outback paddock up in flames, a grazier says.

What's next?

The faulty satellite will still "produce science", but a replacement is expected to be online by the middle of the year.
