In short:

Scientists have identified a new gene linked to ulcerative colitis, a type of inflammatory bowel disease.

They studied three generations of a Brisbane family with five affected family members, using genomic sequencing to pinpoint a mutation in the OTUD3 gene linked to the debilitating condition.

What's next?

The researchers hope their discovery will eventually lead to better treatments.
