Program: 01 The Road to Bondi | Father and Son

Space to play or pause, M to mute, left and right arrows to seek, up and down arrows for volume.

You think you know the story. You saw the footage. You know how it ended. But you don’t know how it began.

In the first episode of The Road to Bondi, reporter Josh Robertson traces the decades-long path that led a father and son to carry out Australia's worst ever terror attack.

He takes us from the narrow streets of old Hyderabad in India, where a young man grew up in a respectable family, to the western Sydney suburbs, where he begins to unravel.

When Josh teams up with one of Australia’s leading forensic psychiatrists to sift through the evidence, a troubling picture of home life begins to emerge: a controlling and secretive father, a son who wanted to belong, and a family already fracturing long before the first shots rang out.

This is an investigation into how radicalisation within a family can leave almost no trace — and whether the warning signs were there for ASIO to find.
