Letters to hit-and-run victim's family 'vital' in Albany cold case investigation

The authors of three anonymous letters to the family of a man killed in an Albany hit-and-run 35 years ago may hold crucial information about how he died, police believe.
Major Crash investigators are in the Great Southern town, about 400km south of Perth, this week to pursue new lines of inquiry into the 1991 death of 28-year-old Mark Edward Gregory.
Major Crash Detective Senior Sergeant Hugh Le Tessier said in 2013, 2016 and in 2018 Mr Gregory's family received different letters that were all anonymous.

He said the letters provided general information about the incident.
"The letters themselves provide information that indicate certain people were involved," Senior Sergeant Le Tessier said.
"We need them [authors] to put context around what they've written to give us further information and lead us to evidence that may implicate people involved.
"We need the specifics behind it."

What we know
Police said between 4am and 4:54am on April 7, 1991, Mr Gregory was walking along Mercer Road in Walmsley after leaving a party when he was struck by an unknown vehicle between Towereroo Road and Lower King Road.

The driver failed to stop and fled the scene, and has never been identified.

After a recent review of the original case, police have been able to identify several new lines of inquiry.
Senior Sergeant Le Tessier said they were urging the public for their assistance.
"There are people in the community who know what happened and hold that vital piece of information detectives need to solve this case,"he said.
Police have revealed they are speaking with people who attended the party Mr Gregory had been at, as well as others who have provided information about the incident over the years.
Investigators are also reviewing historical Crime Stoppers reports, previous media coverage and earlier investigative material, including several letters received over the years by police and Mr Gregory's family, and have called for the authors of these letters to come forward to assist with the investigation.
"Even after 35 years, new information could make a significant difference to this investigation."
Everything is on table
In 2014, police revealed they were investigating Mr Gregory's death as a potential homicide.

Now in 2025, Senior Sergeant Le Tessier said everything was still on the table.
"From that review we haven't been able to say categorically one way or another whether it was a deliberate act or whether it's an accident," he said.
Senior Sergeant Le Tessier hopes the passage of time will result in people coming forward to clear their conscience.
"Some people have carried this on their conscience for that amount of time and to actually make the effort to write a letter and provide it to the police indicates that they are keen to see the matter resolved," he said.
